Welcome to week 17 of supporting art works in need. In the month of July 2016 we came across a art work named Give a Kid a Blanket here in New Zealand. We read through the description as a team and decided let’s do it, let’s get our Manurewa community together to gather blankets for our children in need.
To give you a little bit of a background of the art work we decided to write about who they are and what they do; Give a Kid a Blanket is a community activated artwork run by Bernie Harfleet and Donna Turtle Sarten who are based in Auckland, New Zealand. In 2015 they were able to give out over 1000 blankets as community members and stores opened their homes and stores to be drop off points for the people of the community to donate to.
This year the initiative ran until August 1st, 2016, originally they thought they may not have had time to complete this initiative this year as they are quite busy with there sculpture project named Max and Bella. However, they managed to get together to provide a 2016 Give a Kid a Blanket routine. We were ecstatic when they decided to go ahead with this as we were able to gather a bunch of blankets from our small Manurewa community and were even donated baby jumpsuits, toys and more to be given to this initiative. As we gathered our donations together to be picked up by a local drop off point.
We also watched as the service would go out and pick up bags and bags of donations from all over Auckland, the organizers of the Give a Kid a Blanket initiative would travel from South Auckland to East Auckland to west Auckland to the north shore and more. Each week they would put the effort into picking up donations, sorting through 100’s of different items and they would see nurses and health care workers picking up donations for families in need.
We were privileged to be able to donate to this initiative this month, It makes a difference to our community, it brought complete strangers together to help each other succeed through the winter months. The Give a Kid a Blanket project was one we enjoyed being involved with and we hope to be involved again next year.
We would like to send out our appreciation to the organizers, the drop off points, the collectors, and the community for being involved.
